Develop the Right Foundation for Poker Strategy
A successful game of poker is a combination of luck and good poker strategy. It involves the mathematics of probability and deep reflection and assessment of unreliable and deceiving information. The conduct of sound analysis of information gathered from the game table coupled with conservative risk-taking comprises the vital ingredients to a successful game.
There is never a perfect way to play poker because the cards are hidden from your sight. The only way to play it is to rely on intelligent guesses based largely on your gut feel of the situation honed by years of experience observing how players act and react to different stimuli on the game table. In the same token, there is no perfect poker strategy that would work for different players all of the time.
Because of this, you need to craft and customize your own poker strategy based on your own priorities and your goal while drawing from your own experiences to decide how you should best approach the game. Before you sit down at the table and play, you need to take into account some factors that will affect your game such as: What game do you want to play; how skilled you are in playing it; and, how much money are you willing to put at risk.
The fundamental poker strategy is to have the right focus and attitude in the first place. Having the right mindset and positive attitude will go a long way in helping you draw from your innermost being the inspiration, fortitude and foresight from which luck springs eternal.
When you finally decide to play the game, remember to play the pairs before the flop to avoid garbage or weak hands. When you get a straight, don't draw at the low end because unconnected low and medium cards are commonly not playable including suited cards that cannot flop a straight. Be careful when playing the starting low pairs and you should generally fold if you do not flop a set. When you have a two way draw after the flop, go on the offensive and raise if you can make a flush or a straight. Uniform flops like 5, 6, 7 can easily turn into straights and it may overtake your high pair. And, if you face suited flops forming a completed flush, have two pairs to fill up.
A basic poker strategy is to avoid being too predictable, so vary your play and bluff from time to time. With the right timing, it is not far fetched to win pots that your hand does not even deserve. Many players commit the very costly mistake of sitting at the gaming table before they have even properly understood the basics of poker. Have a good money management plan way ahead and set the amount that you are willing to lose to keep you from chasing your losses so that you can quit the game before you cross your limits. Most importantly, keep a watchful eye on how your opponents telegraph their hands to their bodies. Poker is largely a psychological game that depends on your power of observation and how you would analyze body language.
